If I miss a day without showering, I feel awful! I love the way a shower can refresh you, help a sinus headache get better, and give you time to sing and pray. In one of my son’s messages when he was in college, he jokingly tells of how he hadn’t showered in a week, and how his Mom didn’t know about it – ugh! (Glad he has changed that habit!)
Growing up in Brazil, our showers were cold water only, so we’d all want the first shower, the one where the sun had been blazing on the pipes, creating a natural warmth! On the other hand, after the visit we just made back to Brazil, the heat of the day was so intense that immediately before bed, that cold shower was the only way to refresh your body and remove some of the heat that had built up over the day. Refreshing!
Ever heard the phrase, “Cleanliness is next to godliness?” In many ways, that is true. Why is it that so many people want to say that they are, “Christians,” yet have no real desire to leave the things behind that keep them from a real relationship with Christ? When you begin a job, part of your training is how they want you to look: neat and clean, even with fresh breath and clean teeth! When you are in the first stages of dating, you always want to look your best, smell your best, be your best! So it’s a no-brainer that the same thing is to be expected in a relationship with Christ.
When we come to Christ, we take a spiritual shower – our dirt gets washed away and we are clean! At first it can be difficult to live so different from the old life, but the more you, “shower,” the easier it becomes! One day, we will live with Him forever, and the need to shower will be over. Until that day, take encouragement from the verses below and let God’s love bathe you and create a new you, every day!
Psalm 51:7 & 10
7 Purify me from my sins, and I will be clean;
wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God.
Renew a loyal spirit within me.
22 let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him. For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ’s blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water.
9You have given up your old way of life with its habits.
10Each of you is now a new person. You are becoming more and more like your Creator, and you will understand him better.
2 Corinthians 5:17-20
17Anyone who belongs to Christ is a new person. The past is forgotten, and everything is new.
19So turn to God! Give up your sins, and you will be forgiven.
20-21But that isn’t what you were taught about Jesus Christ. He is the truth, and you heard about him and learned about him. 22You were told that your foolish desires will destroy you and that you must give up your old way of life with all its bad habits. 23Let the Spirit change your way of thinking 24and make you into a new person. You were created to be like God, and so you must please him and be truly holy.
3We used to be stupid, disobedient, and foolish, as well as slaves of all sorts of desires and pleasures. We were evil and jealous. Everyone hated us, and we hated everyone.
4God our Savior showed us how good and kind he is.
5He saved us because of his mercy, and not because of any good things that we have done. God washed us by the power of the Holy Spirit. He gave us new birth and a fresh beginning.
6God sent Jesus Christ our Savior to give us his Spirit.
7Jesus treated us much better than we deserve. He made us acceptable to God and gave us the hope of eternal life.
1Such a large crowd of witnesses is all around us! So we must get rid of everything that slows us down, especially the sin that just won’t let go. And we must be determined to run the race that is ahead of us.
